5 Ways To Define Spaces in Open Concept Design
If a space remains undefined within an open concept design then it simply looks like a big collective mess. Open concept design is wonderful, but still needs to have flow and definitive spaces.
How do we do that?
Floor Finishes
Different types of floor finishes or area carpets, or even a combination of both will help define one area from another. Perhaps, hardwood in the living room and tile in the kitchen, as an example. The different flooring separates the spaces from each other but in a subtle way that still allows the design to flow throughout the home.
Ceiling Treatments
Box beam, coffered, plaster, textured, or even, heaven forbid…popcorn. Ceiling treatments help define a space in the same way floor finishes would. In fact, you may use floor finishes and ceiling treatments together, basically mirroring each other.
Paint Colours
Paint colours are a fun and great way to define spaces. Each space can have its own colour, all while making sure they complement the colours of the other spaces. Good colour choices can really tie a space together and allow for beautiful continuity between the different areas of your open concept design.
Furniture
Furniture is a perfect accent to tie a space together and really separate it from the others. Again, making sure to complement the style of the home, furniture can be a perfect personal and creative touch to a space.
Archways, Columns and Trim
Things like columns and trimmed archways can act as dividers while keeping the wide open feel of the open concept design. It helps to create visual vignettes as you`re enjoying one part of a room. Sometimes, half walls can do the trick by allowing you to place furniture, yet also enjoy the other elements between spaces.
We know it may be overwhelming to try and achieve all of these aspects of a room to flow with each other, but what helps is choosing a design style first. The design will affect everything from floor finishes to furniture. Choose a style in the beginning, and it will make it easier to obtain defined, yet nicely flowing, spaces throughout your open concept home.
